WoW Classic Keyring Guide

May-04-2021 PST
Categories:news

A keyring is a bag that holds keys and can be used to access many doors in Azeroth. The advantage is that saves a good amount of bag slots. Keyring was first released in patch 1.11 update of Classic WoW and has been live since 10th December 2019.

The icon of the keyring is thin and can be found in the default UI, left of the bag slot. Upon clicking the UI, you’ll have the keyring bag slot opened where you can see all the keys that are present in your keyring. You will normally not have direct access to the keyring slot, but it will appear once you collect or find a key that is compatible with it. It also has a limit to the number of keys that can be stored in and it increases with an increase of the player's combat level.

Players with 1 to 40 combat level will have access to 4 slots in their keyring, likewise, 41 to 50 will have access to 8 slots and 51 to 60 will have access to 12 slots. Though keyrings are quite useful to many players, some players don’t require them, like the blacksmith, who can create Arcanite Skeleton Keys that open many of the doors, Engineers who can just blow-up doors with the help of a bomb (Powerful Seaforium Charge), or the rouges who can simply picklock the doors with the help of their lockpicking skill.

There are two types of compatible keys; The Dungeon Keys and the Open World Keys.

The Dungeon Keys

Dungeon keys are used to open dungeon entrances, zones that are locked and are restricted for players to pass through or enter. These keys even help skip some parts of the dungeon that a player doesn’t wish to proceed in.

Workshop Keys

Workshop keys let your skip the initial part of the dungeon by opening the way that leads directly to the back entrance of the Gnomeregan. You can get them as a drop from Electrocutioner, who is a boss in Gnomeregan. Aside from that, Engineers with small seaforium charge, blacksmiths that can create true silver skeleton key and rogues who have 150 in lockpicking skill do not require the workshop key.

The Scarlet Key

Scarlet Key helps in opening the cathedral wings, as well as the armoury in the Scarlet Monastery or the scarlet bastion near stratholme. It can be obtained by defeating the final boss of the scarlet monastery library wing and can be found in Doan’s strongbox, just close to arcanist Doan. Engineers with large seaforium charge, blacksmiths that can create true silver skeleton key and rogues who have 175 in lockpicking skill do not require this key.

Prison Cell Key

Prison Cell key opens all the prison doors in the lowermost area of Blackrock Depths, and the key is also required for the quest “Alliance Version of the Onyxia’s Lair Attunement”. You can obtain the key from one of the bosses in the prison area of Blackrock Depths, who is named “High Interrogator Gerstahn”. Engineers with large seaforium charge, blacksmiths that can create arcanite skeleton key and rogues who have 250 in lockpicking skill do not require this key.

Shadow Forge Key

Shadow Forge Key opens all the prison doors on the uppermost area of Blackrock Depths, and also allows you to skip the lower section of the dungeon. It also grants you access to the Grim Guzzler bar and can be obtained from the quest “Dark Iron Legacy” that is offered to you by Franclorn Forge Wright in the mountains of Blackrock. He can only be visible to you when you’re in your ghost form (after being dead). Engineers with large seaforium charge, blacksmiths that can create arcanite skeleton key and rogues who have 250 in lockpicking skill do not require this key.

Skeleton Key

Skeleton Key grants you access through the Scholomance by opening its entrance door. You can obtain it from the quest “The Key to Scholomance”, after completing the long quest chain in the Western Plague Lands. Engineers with powerful seaforium charge and rogues who have 280 in lockpicking skill do not require this key.

Key to the City

Key to the City grants you access through the dead side of stratholme and can be obtained from a boss on the living side of Stratholme named Magistrate Barthilas. Engineers with powerful seaforium charge and rogues who have 300 in lockpicking skill do not require this key.

Crescent Key

This key opens the north and west sections of Dire Maul, along with the west and north sections of the library entrance. You can obtain the Crescent key from a mini-boss that can be found in the east section of the dire maul, called Pusillin. Engineers with powerful seaforium charge and rogues who have 300 in lockpicking skill do not require this key.

The Open World Keys

These keys do not lead to the entrance of any dungeons and are used to open specific places throughout the world of the classic. The key is named as Key to Searing Gorge and can be used to open a door from loch Modan to searing gorge, which allows safe passage for a character who is in alliance and needs to pass through the Badlands to reach the zone. It can be obtained from the quest “At Last!”, which is a short quest chain in loch modan. Engineers with large seaforium charge, blacksmiths that can create arcanite skeleton key and rogues who have 225 in lockpicking skill do not require this key.

Incompatible Keys

These keys do not do into the keyring slot of a player’s bag and are used to unlock certain things. Even a rogue, engineer or blacksmith cannot these doors with their skills. The keys below are permanent, however, keys like Relic Coffer or Gordok Shackle keys are not compatible with the keyring and disappears after one use.

Goblin Transponder

Allows you to teleport from Booty Bay in Stranglethorn to Gnomeregan if you’re a horde character. It can be obtained from the quest “Chief Engineer Scooty”.

Sceptre of Celebras

Allows you to open a portal to the inner part of Maraudon, which is good as it skips the purple/orange sections of the dungeon. It can be obtained from the quest “The Sceptre of Celebras” and requires the NPCs Noxxion and Lord Vyletongue to be killed.

Mallet of Zul’Farrak

Helps you summon the boss Gahz’rilla in the dungeon Zul’Farrak and can be obtained by looting the sacred mallet from Qiaga the keeper, which is at the altar of zul in the hinterlands.

Grime Slit Out House Key

Helps you unlock the wooden outhouse which is located in the searing gorge and can be obtained from the dark iron sentries. It is also a requirement to start the “key to freedom” quest.

Seal of Ascension

Helps open the entrance to the upper section of the Blackrock Spire and can be obtained from the quest “Seal of Ascension”.
